GAMSAT Exam: What to expect

The GAMSAT question paper is divided into three sections, namely:

• Section 1 – Reasoning in Humanities and Social Sciences -100 minutes
• Section 2 – Written Communication -60 minutes
• Section 3 – Reasoning in Biological and Physical Sciences -170 minutes

Section 1 – The 75 questions in this section are multiple choice format with four alternative answers to choose from. Many of these questions are passage based, where the passage can be in the form of a poem, a novel excerpt, a journal excerpt or an extract of a critical theory. The aim is to allow candidates to make judgements based on the passages using plausible reasoning. In addition to this, there are questions based on cartoons, proverbs, graphical data, and diagrammatic representations.

Section 2 – This section tests the candidate’s control of language, grammatical structure and expression. This section involves essay writing where the candidates are given two themes in the form of two sets of quotes and they have to write two essays related to these themes. Thought and content and organisation and expression are tested by three independent examiners.

Section 3 – The 110 questions in this section are designed to test recall, reasoning and problem solving in a scientific context. Questions are made up of: 40% Chemistry , 40% Biology and 20% Physics

Passage-based multiple choice questions are used and candidates are required to prove their ability to evaluate evidence and categorise information to generate strategies and problem solving techniques.

Post GAMSAT : Studying medicine

A number of reputable universities offer medical degrees for those who are successful in obtaining a GAMSAT pass.

Eligibility for certain programs will depend upon your GAMSAT score and ability to pass a face-to-face interview examination.

4-year Medical Degree programs in Australia are available from :

• Australian National University
• Deakin University
• Flinders University
• Griffith University,
• University Of Melbourne
• Monash University
• Notre Dame University (Fremantle and Sydney),
• University of Queensland,
• University of Sydney,
• University of Wollongong
• University of Melbourne will also join this league and admit post-graduate students for medicine as of 2011.

4-year Dentistry Degrees can be obtained from :

• University of Sydney
• University Of Melbourne.

2-year Master of Pharmacy is offered by The Faculty of Pharmacy at The University of Sydney.
4-year Doctor of Optometry is available from The Melbourne Graduate School of Science at the University of Melbourne.

*NOTE :It is to be noted that the University of Queensland no longer holds interviews for their graduate medicine program. An interview is also no longer held in the University of Melbourne for admission to the course of Dentistry.

Did you know ? – 10 GAMSAT Facts:

1. Only 10 out of 50 aspirants are admitted in universities.
2. If English is NOT your first language, you CAN take in a bilingual dictionary to the GAMSAT test centre.
3. If you are an international student (Non Aus/NZ), then you do NOT need to calculate GPAs.
4. You are permitted to use a non-programmable calculator for Section 3only.
5. You can use valid GAMSAT Australia Results for admission to universities under GAMSAT U.K and GAMSAT Ireland.
6. The University of Queensland is no longer in the process of interviewing applicants for the GAMSAT graduate program.
7. You are required to show your valid passport or a current photo bearing driver’s license on the day of sitting for GAMSAT.
8. Your GAMSAT score is valid for 2 years.
9. Email is the primary means of communication concerning GAMSAT registration, admission tickets, and results. Candidates must provide a current valid email address which will be maintained during the registration, test, and reporting cycle.
10. Applicants who completed their Bachelor degrees more than 10 years previously and who do not have any evidence of formal academic qualifications are advised to check their eligibility before registering for GAMSAT.
