It was established as a School of Medicine and Surgery in 1834 and became the University of Newcastle upon Tyne by an Act of Parliament in August 1963.
Founded in 1966,it was named in honour of navigator Matthew Flinders,who explored and surveyed the South Australian coastline in the early 19th century
Established in 1874,it is the third oldest university in Australia.It has produced five Nobel laureates,101 Rhodes scholars and is a member of the Group of Eight,as well as the Sandstone universities.
