Taking the GAMSAT seriously and preparing your study environment
Time is ticking down for the March sitting of the GAMSAT and have you haven’t yet started to take your study seriously then now’s the time to do so. If you’re only a recent graduate then you’re probably very aware of the need to have a very holistic approach to your studies. If you’ve been out of the game for a while or really want a GAMSAT orientated spin on how to approach your studies then we’re sure this article will be of use to you.
Learn from the best:
When you start on the journey that is the study for the graduate medical program of your choice don’t be afraid to invest a little bit of your time and money. The Internet is filled with a lot of sources for GAMSAT materials, practice tests and resources. Find the best ones and make use of them.
Where do you study?
We firmly believe that having access to the Internet is invaluable for any type of student in this day and age. If you are one of the few that lack this resource at home then make sure that you make use of public facilities that are available at your local college or library. While you’re at it, make sure that your online research/study has a focus. It’s far too easy to lose track of what you’re trying to research and go off checking your email etc. Short, aimed bursts of online study with a definite goal in mind will keep your attention on what you need to study.
Mature students in particular might find it difficult to find the time to study with all the distractions that a family and a job represent. If you’re in this boat then be very diligent with making time for your study and set some firm rules for the household to follow that will give you both time for your regular activities and study.
The GAMSAT is your key to getting into the medical school of your choice. Just like the best language programs recommend immersing yourself in a culture to best learn a language, so do we think it’s a great idea to keep yourself in an environment that will inspire your studies. Everything from your programs you watch on television to the newspapers and novels you read should have some sort of medical slant to them. Visits to your local hospital and chats with past and present med students should be the order of the day. An ascetic student life like this is only for the true study enthusiast but if you try this a month before the exam you can just imagine how inspired and enthusiastic you will be when the end of March arrives.
Now let’s think about this: in the future you’re going to be some sort of medical practitioner (hopefully), the custodian of the general public’s health and well being. Many people will look to you to be the fount of knowledge when it comes to healthy living.
So perhaps its time to lay off the tinnies and wild Bondi Beach parties (if only for a little bit) to prioritize and make sure that both your body and mind are finely tuned for the upcoming test. Hopefully the healthy lifestyle will stick and you can be a devout doctor practicing what you preach!
The time is really getting very close for the GAMSAT test now and, while it might not be too late to start your studies, you really need every advantage you can take now at this late stage. Really immerse yourself in your preparation and hopefully you’ll come out with the result you want.
